China Guardian to Collect Items in North America for Its Autumn Auction
2012-08-02

China Guardian, one of the biggest auction companies in China, has announced its plan to collect items this August in the United States.

“North America is a place where many overseas Chinese people are living; collectors there have a time-honored collection history and social environment. We have done a series of activities in the US before, and this time we hope to increase our exchanges with them. Also, we are going to hold our first auction in Hong Kong to better meet demands of foreign clients. We hope more collectors can join us,” said Hu Yanyan, director and vice president of China Guardian.

According to its auction schedule for the second half of 2012, China Guardian Auction (Hong Kong) will begin its first auction business this early October. The Hong Kong branch, established on May 2011, is wholly owned by its Beijing-based parent company.

“As our business expands and the international business grows, we decided to establish the Hong Kong branch and hold its first auction this autumn,” said Hu. “Hong Kong is an Asian financial center and an international free trade port. We believe it will provide impetus to our company's business development. Hong Kong is conveniently located and enjoys a favorable business environment, which helps us to better meet demands of foreign clients.”

“Through the auction this autumn, we hope that we can gain some advanced international experience and insight into new operating styles that will enable us to provide more items and excellent service to collectors worldwide.” Hu added.

China Guardian Auctions Co., Ltd., established in May 1993, is the earliest auction company to specialize in the sale of Chinese artwork of all varieties. By the end of 2011, the company has seen a total sales volume of 31.1 billion yuan, the highest figure among Chinese auction companies, which makes it the largest auction company in China. It is also listed as the top five artwork auction company by European Fine Art Foundation, a leading art market research institution.

From 2010 to 2012, China Guardian has been rated as The Most Popular Chinese Auction Company by Hurun Report; in 2008, it acted as the exclusive auction partner of the Olympic Expo Beijing 2008. It also held an exclusive auction for the World Stamp Exhibition in 1999 and 2009.

In 2011, China Guardian’s business contents included Chinese painting and calligraphy, porcelain and works of art, Chinese oil painting and sculpture, photography, rare books, stamps, coins, silver sycees, banknotes and bronze mirrors, jewelry and jadeite. Over 29000 auction items were sold and the total transaction volume reached over 11 billion yuan, with four single items breaking the 100 million yuan barrier. All this made it China Guardian’s best performance since it was founded in 1993.

The 2012 Spring Auction, ended this May, realized a total of 2.14 billion yuan. The highlights included the "LONG LIVE COMPLETE VICTORY OF THE GREAT CULTURAL REVOLUTION" stamps, which sold for 7,302,500 yuan - a record for a stamp in China; SHAOSHAN-REVOLUTIONARY SACRED PLACE OF CHAIRMAN MAO'S FORMER RESIDENCE, a contemporary painting by Li Keran and 141.5×243.1 cm in size, was sold at 124.2 million yuan, a new record high price in the Spring Auctions.
