A new record for Chinese oil paintings sold within mainland China was achieved at the first day of sale at China Guardian 2005 Autumn Auctions held yesterday (November 4) in Beijing.  The total sale of the first day was over RMB197 million yuan.

“Chairman Mao Visit Guangdong Country” (Lot 42) by Chen Yanning, an impressive oil painting that measures 172.5cm x 294.5cm, sold for RMB10.12 million yuan, setting a new record for Chinese oil paintings sold within mainland China as well as for the artist.  Starting at RMB2 million yuan, the painting was fiercely contested for by both overseas and local customers.  After more than 30 bids, the painting finally went to a European collector.  The high price was in line with market expectations and reflects buyers’ confidence in the Chinese oil paintings.

Realistic paintings were in general well received, with all 14 items sold for good prices, including Wang Xindong’s “Sun in Remote Mountains” (Lot 168) for RM5.06 million yuan, Ai Xuan’s “February Afternoon” (Lot 167) for RMB3.63 million yuan, and Yang Feiyun’s “Red Hanging” (Lot 169) for RMB2.42 million yuan.  That these realistic paintings were able to snatch prices higher than market expectations underlines the growth potential of this category of works.

Gao Yuan, manager of Oil Paintings at China Guardian, commented: “One of the main reasons for the exceptionally good performance for realistic paintings is that they appeal to the aesthetics of the general public and are easier to understand.  Also, there are new buyers in the market who can afford to offer high prices for outstanding works.  Their interests are primarily academic and realistic paintings.  At the same time, the painting style equally appeals to overseas buyers, resulting in fierce competition.”

Works by modern masters like Wu Guanzhong continued to be popular among the bidders.  Wu’s “Golden Field” (Lot 16) sold for RMB5.5 million yuan, “Wild Grass” (Lot 17) sold for RMB4.18 million yuan and “Garden” (Lot 15) sold for RMB3.85 million yuan.  Three paintings by Liu Xiaodong were able to go above RMB1 million yuan.

Also held yesterday was the sale of rare books, which achieved a total sale of RMB15.78 million yuan.  The highlight of the sale was a collection of woodblock-printed Chinese opera scripts by Cheng Yanqiu, one of the four legendary Beijing opera artists of the twentieth century.  The collection provides valuable information about the history of Chinese opera, particularly of the art of the Cheng School and of the development of Chinese opera during the Qing Dynasty.  After fierce bidding, a mainland Chinese institution bought the collection for RMB5.5 million yuan.  A special session on ancient rubbings and calligraphy was held for the first time at China Guardian, with a total sale of RMB2.132 million yuan.

Auctions on ceramics and works of art were also concluded yesterday at a total sale of RMB49.58 million yuan.  Highlights of the sale were several fine conditioned pieces from a Beijing collector, including three pieces of the Yongzheng period: a rare blue and white vase (Lot 414) sold for RMB4.29 million yuan, a pair of doucai bowls (Lot 392) sold for RMB2.2 million yuan and a pair of rare doucai dishes (Lot 393) for RMB2.97 million yuan.  Imperial wares of the Ming and Qing dynasties continued to be popular, as evidenced by the high price of RMB3.3 million yuan for a rare blue and white flower and bird flask of the Yongzheng period (Lot 415).  Non-imperial blue and white wares from the Kangxi period were also well received.  An underglaze-blue and white brushpot (Lot 402) sold for RMB264,000 yuan.  A category with good performance at yesterday’s session was rhinocero horn libation cups, with one finely carved piece of the Ming Dynasty snatching a high price of RMB374,000 yuan.

China Guardian 2005 Autumn Auctions will continue at the Beijing Kunlun Hotel until November 7, 2005.
