China Guardian Spring Sales Reach RMB 2.128 Billion, Setting New Record for Art Auctions in China

On May 18, China Guardian 2010 Spring Auction came to a successful conclusion with a record-breaking RMB 2.128 billion (US 311.5 million) in total sales for a selection of fine objects in the following areas: Chinese Painting and Calligraphy; Porcelain, Jade, and Works of Art; Contemporary Ceramic and Carving Arts; Chinese Oil Painting and Sculpture; Rare Books and Manuscripts; Stamps, Coins, Banknotes, and Bronze Mirrors; and, Jewellery and Jadeite. This is the first time the Spring/Autumn series auctions in Mainland China have surpassed RMB 2 billion in total sales. Various categories, themed auctions, and individual objects set new highs in the art market. One work by Zhang Daqian sold for over RMB 100.8 million (US 14.754 million) creating a new record in the category of Chinese Modern and Contemporary Paintings. It is also the first time that the price of a single work in this particular category exceeded RMB 100 million (US 14.6 million) worldwide.

This auction’s record-breaking trophy was the breathtaking landscape painting by the 20th century master Zhang Daqian titled “Achensee Lake” that sold for RMB 100,800,000 (US14.754 million)––a new milestone for a single work in Chinese modern and contemporary painting. The huge painting “Majestic Landscape” by Shi Lu, a leading Chang'an School artist, fetched a staggering RMB 31.9 million (US 4.6 million) while Pan Tianshou's tall hanging scroll “Eagle on Rock Finger Painting,” soared to RMB 28 million (US 4 million)––creating new records at auction for each artist. The largest auction to date featuring works of the celebrated calligrapher Yu Youren obtained 100% turnover and total sales exceeding RMB 300,000 (US 44,000). The 192 individual works of painting and calligraphy joined together in one album entitled “Loyal Pine Forever Luxuriant” was snatched up by a collector for RMB 40,320,000 (US 5.9 million).

Turning to Classical Chinese Painting, the rare Song dynasty handscroll formerly in the imperial collection and recorded in the "Shiqubaoji" imperial catalogue, “Song Copy After Guo Zhongshu's ‘Four Horsemen Hunting” earned an impressive RMB 79,520,000 (US 11.639 million). Another work listed in the “Shiqubaoji” “Listening to the Waterfall” painted by the court artist Jin Tingbiao during the Qianlong era (1736-1796) was won at RMB 45,136,000 (US 6.6 million) after intense bidding. In calligraphy, the work designated a "top-level cultural relic" by Fu Shan “Eight Panels in Running Script” and Wen Zhengming's meticulous work from his later years, “Calligraphy in Small Regular Script” together earned RMB 5.376 million (US 786,885).

In Porcelain, Jades and Works of Art, the total turnover exceeded RMB 340 million (US 49.763 million) during this grand event. The themed auction, “Treasures from Imperial Qing Court” brought in RMB 147 million (US 21.5 million). Taking first prize was the exquisite Qianlong era “Underglaze-blue Iron-red Cloud-and-dragon Motif Tibetan-style Ewer” which fetched a remarkable RMB 35.8 million (US 5.2 million). The 45 artworks in "Arts from the Scholar's Studio II: the Jiansong Ge Collection" achieved 100% turnover with RMB 84 million (US 12.2 million) in total sales––an average of RMB 2 million (US 290,000) per object. One teapot created by the master Gu Jingzhou in 1948 with Wu Hufan's calligraphy reached a staggering RMB 12.3 million (US 1.8 million). The themed auctions “Modern Ceramic Art,” “Creativity and Artistry––Modern Fine Arts and Crafts,” and “Masterpieces of Chinese Stone Art and Jadeite” exceeded past achievements with total sales surpassing RMB 56 million (US 8.1 million).

In Chinese Oil Painting and Sculpture, Shi Chong's well-known painting “Landscape of Today” shot up to a stupendous RMB 26,096,000 (US 3.8 million) creating a new record for the artist. The 1972 bronze sculpture by Tang Daxi, “The Long March,” sold for a solid RMB 481,600 (US 70,259).
