China Guardian Seasons Auction No. 4 Totals a Hammer Price of Over RMB 69 Million
2013-12-13

After two continuous days of intense auctioning, China Guardian’s 2006 Seasons Auction No. 4 came to a full conclusion on December 17th, with a total of RMB 69.479 million.

The four sales of painting and calligraphy brought RMB 50.046 million altogether. Special themed segments from famous collections were met with considerable welcome at this auction. Sales of the ‘Wu Feng Lou Collection’ and the ‘Painting and Calligraphy Collection of Mr. Zhuang Yan’ were pursued by large groups of collectors.

Aside from the art piece’s inherent value it is unquestionably the pedigree of famous collectors that lends added value to a work. Li Xiongcai’s ‘Pine and Waterfall’ was not only a rare and fine piece in this year’s market, but was also part of the Wu Feng Lou Collection of Mr. Lin Mengxi, and eventually sold at a price of RMB 352,000. Another work offered from a foreign collector was the early and fine Chen Peiqiu piece ‘Narrow Spring Deep in the Mountains’, which sold for RMB 616,000.

The value of calligraphy works increased as a whole this year, and collectors looked well upon works from classical eras through the Republican period. The special segment of ‘Calligraphy by Yu Youren’ also caught the full attention of the room. The 30 exhibited pieces were from representative periods of the artist’s life and every lot sold. Mr. Yu Youren was praised as the ‘Saint of Contemporary Cursive’ for his individual style of cursive script. His great exploits and name were added long ago to the annals of history. Representing a generation of calligraphers, his accomplished work is still honored today.

Yu Youren’s calligraphy was based in the traditional study of stele, and fused the aesthetics of stele and rubbings, creating the style of a generation. Another success of this sale was that collectors’ habits are changing from a singular focus on big name artists and big pieces towards a more integrated valuation of other factors, including the artist’s entire works, academic background and social impact, etc.

Classical painting and calligraphy sales are certainly on the rise, and collectors have raised their understanding of not only specialty areas such as calligraphy, but through years of experience have also considerably advanced their insights and appreciation for classical painting. For example Yun Shouping’s ‘Flora’, Han He’s ‘Calligraphy’, Song Kuang’s ‘Thousand Character Essay’ all surpassed their ideal market values. At the same time, contemporary painting and calligraphy has entered a calm transitional phase, with bids being cast much more reasonably.

Sales of porcelain and works of art totaled RMB 19.433 million. The Qianlong era ‘Gilt-bronze Bodhisattva’ and ‘Gilt-bronze Lhamo’ figures that attracted so much attention before the auction each sold at RMB 418,000. The height of these two figures was 12.5 and 12.8 cm respectively, and each was faced with the ‘da qing Qianlong nian jingzao’ inscription along with the figure’s title. The small bronze Buddha figures are of fine production, of the highest standard produced by Qianlong imperial bureau, and meant for the ‘Sixth Grade Buddha Tower’. There were eight ‘Sixth Grade Buddha Towers’ in the Qianlong reign. The one in the Palace Museum is the only one still entirely preserved, the rest have been destroyed or separated over time. That these two works should reach the auction market was a rare opportunity, and so the works received the good attention of collectors who compete hotly for the lots, which reached ideal prices.

At the same time, Rhinoceros horns are still continuing their strong momentum, with all of the lots put up for auction selling successfully. A particular piece, an ‘ ‘Eight Scholars’ Libation Cup’, sold at the high price of RMB 517,000.

The market in jade is also continuing to heat up with many successes. A Jin dynasty ‘White Jade Incense Burner’ was looked well upon despite damage to the cover, and sold for RMB 143,000. Ming and Qing imperial porcelain, whose extant works are few and whose fine works are fewer, have long been a focus of collectors. In this auction, a ‘Guan-style Foliate Lip Bowl’, a Qianlong imperial tea implement, sold at the high price of RMB 220,000, while a Qianlong ‘Underglaze Blue ‘Nine Peaches’ Platter’ sold at RMB 418,000.

Sale of ‘Treasures from the South Seas’ ended on a high note with 86% of the 140 lots successfully selling. Porcelain from shipwrecks have been experiencing market growth in recent years, and are proving to be an easy entry into the market for many reluctant buyers; likewise the prices for lots of similar types and patterns have also been increasing. A Wanli Shipwreck ‘Underglaze Blue ‘Eight Immortals’ Bowl’, accompanied by a wooden stand made from the shipwrecked boat’s body, sold for RMB 93,500, over six times its estimate. Another set of ‘Various Shipwreck Articles’ sold at the high price of RMB 71,500.
