China Guardian Presents Over 6600 Treasures in the 2010 Spring Auction

China Guardian 2010 Spring Auction will take the stage May 6 to May 18 with an unprecedented 29 themed auctions and over 6600 lots. The opening viewing and auction May 6-12 will feature 3600 items assembled by China Guardian's Department of Stamps, Coins, Banknotes, and Bronze Mirrors. Subsequent viewings and auctions will commence May 12 and carry on through May 18 in the following categories: Chinese Painting and Calligraphy; Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art; Contemporary Ceramic and Carving Arts; Chinese Oil Painting and Sculpture; Rare Books and Manuscripts; Fine Jewellery and Jadeite. All viewings and auctions will take place at the Beijing International Hotel Convention Center.

After months of painstaking work to secure and authenticate fine Chinese paintings, Classical Chinese Painting and Calligraphy auction will present Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing masterpieces from various schools and traditions. As in the 2009 Autumn Auction, there will be an individual auction for Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing calligraphy. Painting and calligraphy highlights include a rare Southern Song handscroll, "Song Copy of Guo Zhongshu's 'Four Horsemen Hunting'" listed in the imperial painting catalogue the "Shiqu baoji,” a poetry album written by the Song philosopher Zhu Xi (1130-1200) "Inscriptions for Virtuous and Filial Disciples," and "Inscriptions from the ‘Heart of the Buddha Teachings’" written by five Yuan monks.

The Modern and Contemporary Chinese Painting and Calligraphy auction has assembled an impressive 1100 exemplary works from distinguished Chinese and overseas collections that have been carefully arranged in the following themed auctions: “Yu Youren--Calligraphy Master for a Generation," "Important Works from Private Asian Collectors––Series 1 – 6," "Modern Chinese Painting and Calligraphy (1): Fine Works from Eighteen Chinese and Overseas Collections," "Modern Chinese Painting and Calligraphy (2): Seven Artistic Spheres," "Zhiliu's Elegant Brushwork––Fine Paintings Commemorating Xie Zhiliu's 100th Birthday," "Three Precious Stones––Fine Painting and Calligraphy by Qi Baishi, Fu Baoshi, and Wu Changshuo," "Ancient Methods and Modern Innovations––Zhang Daqian, Huang Binhjong, Wu Hufan, and Contemporary Painters." Among the many notable works are Zhang Daqian's "Austrian Lake," Pan Tianshou's " Finger Painting Eagle on Rock," and Shi Lu's "Majestic Mountain."

China Guardian's Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art auction will once again present imperial objects in a special auction entitled "Treasures from Imperial Qing Court." Moreover, for the first time in its 16-year history, China Guardian is proud to present a special cloisonné auction entitled "Ming and Qing cloisonné for the Imperial Court." Other themed auctions include "Arts from the Scholar’s Studio Ⅱ the Jiansong Ge Collection" and "Designed Signature Furniture by Tian Jiaqing-15th Anniversary." Among the many dazzling objects guaranteed to attract attention, the sale will include a "Qianlong Tibetan-Style Ewer” with underglaze-blue and Iron-red dragon and cloud motif, a Qianlong era “White Jade Carving with ‘Enjoying the Moon Pavilion’ Scene,” and a famous zither with a Jin dynasty inscription, the "Yuanxiao Qingluo," previously owned and played by the zither master Guan Pinghu (1897–1967).

In the area of Modern Ceramic and Carving Arts, Guardian has gathered together an outstanding group of objects including a large "Changhua Chicken-Blood Stone" over 30 cm (nearly 12 in) tall, a rare "Shipiao Teapot" made by the Yixing master Gu Jingzhou in his later years, and a "Shoushan Tianhuang Stone Seal" with exquisite carving.

China Guardian's Chinese Oil Painting and Sculpture auction will present an accomplished and innovative group of "classical" and "contemporary" figure paintings, in addition to an impressive gathering of fine sculpture from the Central South region of China. The many painting highlights include, Shi Chong's "Present Landscape," Chen Yifei's "Green Grasslands," Liu Xiaodong's "Gambling," and Feng Fasi's painting on a revolutionary theme, "Liu Hulan." Collectors should also watch for representative works by the portrait artists Wang Qingsong and Miao Xiaochun.

The auction of Rare Books and Manuscripts assembled 200 fine examples of block-printed books, handwritten correspondence and manuscripts, rubbings after model calligraphy, as well as an important ancient Western scripture. Collectors can look forward to a Ming Jiajing era (1522–1567) block-print book from the Imperial Library of the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736–1795), a manuscript from the Buddhist caves at Dunhuang, an imperial edict from the Tongzhi era (1862–1874), and a printed edition of the "Gutenberg Bible" dated between 1450-1455.

"Masterpieces of Chinese Stone Art and Jadeite" auction will delight jewellery lovers with 39 precious pieces of jadeite including a necklace, beads, pendants, bracelets, rings, earrings, brooches, and various other items of fine jewellery.

The Stamps, Coins, Banknotes, and Bronze Mirrors auction of 3600 lots will be divided into 5 auctions. A large-sized "Warring States Bronze Spade Coin," an extremely rare 1912 "Yuan Shikai Commemorative Silver Coin" and a "Complete Set of X1980 T46 Monkey Stamps" will honor the opening of China Guardian 2010 Spring Auction.
