Collectors packed the auction house.

After the exciting 3-day preview and 4-day auctions, the first phase of the 2014 China Guardian Autumn Auctions ended perfectly with a total of 1.675 billion yuan in sales on Nov 23. The autumn auction presenting stamps and coins will be held from Nov 26 to 27; the preview was Nov 23 to 25.

Hu Yanyan, director, president and CEO of China Guardian, said this time many important collections’ hammer prices topped the bidding records and the five special auctions reached 100 percent trade volume.

Soldier in Plateau by Huangzhou, sold at 81.71m yuan

The sale of Chinese paintings and calligraphy remains the high point of the autumn auctions. The most remarkable session, Grand View: Chinese Painting Highlight, reached a total of 583m yuan. Sixteen masterpieces by Huang Zhou totaled 81.71m yuan, including Soldier in Plateau, which was painted in the 1960s and raked in 38.87m yuan. Lai Shaoqi’s Dream to Yellow Mountain was sold at 39.1m yuan, which is a new record for his work.

An extremely rare and fine glazed cooper-red double-gourd vase from the Qing Dynasty, fetched 16.1m yuan

Besides Chinese paintings and calligraphy, other special sessions, including porcelain, furniture, works of art and rare books, performed well. So was the Buddhist figure auction that brought in 55.81m yuan. Five private auctions, such as sessions for Yisushanfang studio, Yinsoudaguan and Yiyunzhai, realized 100 percent trade volume.

Many collectors and attendees said the fruitful results boost their confidence in the development of the art work market.

Lai Shaoqi’s Dream to Yellow Mountain, sold at 39.1m yuan

The collections of the Grand View remained popular

On the evening of Nov 21, 15 paintings at the Grand View auction were sold for over ten million yuan. The specific auctions for painting masters Huang Zhou and Wang Duo enjoyed 100 percent and 95 per cent trade volume, respectively. This implies that painting and calligraphy by famous artists are always the hot pot of the art market.

Folding armchair, Ming Dynasty, sold at 23.575m yuan

Five special sessions reached 100 per cent trade volume

The auction for the painting master Huang Zhou was especially fierce. His 16 paintings were sold out and fetched 81.71m yuan.

A Choice Collection - Chinese Ming Furniture from the Grace Wu Bruce Collection brought in 105m yuan. The folding armchair was the highlight, which was sold at the price of 23.575m yuan.

At the Chusai Kanayama’s Collection of Seals’ Impression, all 176 items were sold for 22.75m yuan in total.

The trade volume of the Yisushanfang Studio Collection reached 13.46m yuan. Five-Character Poem in Cursive Script by Huang Zhibi was sold for 2.53m yuan. Calligraphy in Running Script by Liu Yong raked in 1.955m yuan.

The 38 Zisha teapots, made by modern Zisha masters Gu Jingzhou, He Daohong and Jiang Rong, gained popularity among collectors in the session Collection of Yixing Zisha Pottery by Yi Yunzhai. The session brought 12.52m yuan. A purple clay teapot by Gu Jingzhou went for 4.025m yuan.

China Guardian provided better services for collectors

China Guardian launched the E-catalogue in early November. During the auction, we also provided consulting services for people who had any questions.

Before the autumn auction, China Guardian held exhibition tours in Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Shanghai and Shijiazhuang. Besides exhibitions, we also held many art activities and invited artists, including Mei Mosheng, Gong Jisui, Lu Zhong and Hua Tianxue to give lectures.

In addition, to enhance exchanges with collectors, many advanced equipment was installed at the auction house.

The auction received huge support from collectors

The Fine Gilt - Bronze Buddhist Images and Fine and Rare Wines of the World sessions were the grand finale of the auction on the nights of Nov 20 and 21. Enthusiastic customers packed the auction room and fiercely bid on collections until midnight. Thanks to collectors’ support, the session Fine and Rare Wines of the World raked in 8.22m yuan.

Six masterpieces topped the biding record

At the session Grand View: Chinese Painting Highlight - Modern, Dream to Yellow Mountain by Lai Shaoqi fetched 39.1m yuan.

The Chinese academic oil painting, Two People by Zhao Ge was sold for 9.315m yuan at the Heritage: Chinese Academic Oil Painting and Sculpture session.

At the session Footstone: Chinese Oil Painting Masters, Portrait of Classmate by Sad Ji went for 4.715m yuan, the highest auction price of the artist.

At the same session, Lady in Orange by Ding Yangyong was sold for 3.45m yuan, and also broke his record.

At the session Deploitation: The Diversified Exploration of Chinese Oil Painting, Rainbow Stone by Xu Lei fetched 18.4m yuan, a record high for the artist. Dong Qi Chang Project-5 by Shang Yang was sold for 8.51m yuan, the highest price of his abstract work.
