56th China Guardian Quarterly Auctions breaks five-year record with 198 m yuan
2020-07-22

The 56th China Guardian Quarterly Auctions dropped the last hammer at the Guardian Art Center on July 18, with a total turnover of 198 million yuan and an average turnover rate of 87 percent across the 13 sessions, making it the best result achieved in the past five-years of China Guardian Quarterly Auctions.

A leader in China’s medium-sized auctions, China Guardian Quarterly Auctions combined the online and offline auctions for the first time. The turnover generated from real-time online bidding exceeded 100 million yuan, which went beyond expectations and accounted for more than 65 percent of the total turnover.

Aside from being a great sign for the industry’s reboot as the epidemic wanes in China, this auction also will help collectors regain confidence.

Chinese Painting and Calligraphy

More than 2,500 items in seven sessions of Chinese calligraphy and painting went on auction, with the total turnover rates of modern and ancient Chinese calligraphy and painting lots standing at 77.49 percent and 83.52 percent, respectively. Moreover, two sessions out of seven achieved 100 percent turnover rates.

“Though this quarterly auction had been postponed time and again before finally being held, it has borne fruit, and many items have been sold at prices dozens of or even hundreds of times higher than their estimated prices,” said Xiao Yang, manager of the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Department of China Guardian Quarterly Auctions.
