China Guardian 2018 Autum Auctions

The China Guardian 2018 Autumn Auctions brought 40 special occasions of good news as well as a brilliant turnover of 2.475 billion yuan. The year 2018 ended satisfactorily with a total turnover of more than 5.8 billion yuan to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the company.

During the five-day event, many highlights emerged. Three items sold for over 100 million yuan, and 37 items for more than 10 million yuan. The transaction prices for 13 items broke records and eight sessions achieved a 100 percent turnover rate. These gratifying numbers reflect the persistent exploration and hard work of China Guardian as well as the support and appreciation of new and old friends. They also send a positive signal that the market is still warming up, and provide an important bellwether for future auctions as well as next year’s art market.

Director and President of China Guardian Hu Yanyan said:

The 25th anniversary auction of China Guardian successfully concluded, with a five-day total turnover of 2.475 billion yuan.

Popular works among collectors that all sold for over 100 million include View from the Peek by Pan Tianshou, 11 rubbings collected by An Siyuan (including six from the Song Dynasty), and Inspired by Mao Tse-Tung's Lyrics by Fu Baoshi.

The intense atmosphere of the auctions dispelled the chill of winter, as collectors and artists from home and abroad gathered here with confidence, and unexpected successes continued to emerge during the five-day event.

Pan Tianshou, Fu Baoshi, Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong were the most popular artists at the auction. Many people came to visit and take photos during the preview. And unlike those who simply appreciate the works, the buyers suffered a lot. They waited anxiously for the final results. In the end, the results did not disappoint the expectations of the public. All four works were sold, with the transaction price of Pan Tianshou’s work at the top.

Eleven rubbings, with six from the Song Dynasty and five from the Yuan and Ming dynasties, reached a turnover of 192.6 million yuan. A collection of inscriptions on bronze wares before the Song Dynasty edited by Xue Shanggong sold for a price of 38.525 million yuan. These two rubbings became black horses, ranking top of the session. An unexpected boom happened for the rubbings auctions. The enthusiasts had made abundant preparation before the auctions. Competition was fierce, and there was no intermission from the starting price of 50 million yuan to dropping the hammer at more than 160 million yuan.

There are plenty of buyers and good deals every day. In the Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy session, Letter to Zhou Changfa by Yuan Mei, Qi Juanzao’s Couplet in Regular Script, He Shaoji’s hand scroll of book reviews, Lu Zhixian’s Portrait of Pan Xiangyun, Qian Yuling’s Flora, and Wang Shishen’s Couplet in Clerical Script all sold for prices several times higher than estimated. The collectors care about not only preservation and appreciation for the future, but also style and enjoyment, bringing surprise and hope to the event.

The oil painting class had four special sessions, including the Selected Masterpieces from a Private Asian Collection, and gained a turnover of nearly 400 million yuan. Zhou Chunya’s ?Chinese Landscape ranked first with a total turnover of 42.55 million yuan. Some 13 works each sold for over 10 million yuan, including Zeng Fanzhi’s?Meat No. 3Nativity, Wu Guanzhong’s A Lacebark Pine of the Former Imperial Palaces, Zao Wou-ki’s 25.05.70, Yun Gee’s Knights CombatSet of 2, Zhang Xiaogang’s Bloodline - Big Family: Family, Zao Wou-ki’s Boats on Blue Background and Sanyu’s Pink Rose in a White Vase. Despite ups and downs over the past 10 years, the session on 20th Century & Contemporary Art proved to be promising for the future. In the past two years, as Guardian has become stronger, it has gained confidence and reliable absorption capacity for the market, and accumulated a lot of resources, which made the session shine in China.

In the past 25 years, the market has gradually grown in worries, reflections and improvements. Star-studded and carefully selected lotteries, reasonable prices, thoughtful and standardized processes, and patient and good service have become standard for customers to measure a high-end art auction, and also our goal for winning respect and success.

Thank you for your company and support as always to let our efforts flourish and brighten the whole spring, summer, autumn and winter.

China Guardian Vice-President Guo Tong said:

This time we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of China Guardian, and we have won the confidence and applause of the market this season. We have achieved fruitful results in various business categories. Top collecting groups, well-known private collectors and art collectors from all over the world have joined us in celebrating the event and sharing the spiritual and monetary value of artworks. The Chinese painting and calligraphy sector ended up with 1.265 billion yuan. On the basis of further quality assurance and shrinkage, the turnover amounts and ratios were higher than in the Spring Auctions, showing a rich and delicate market warming trend.

We have noticed that the price of top artwork remains strongly supported. Most items with high estimate price were traded successfully. We have achieved good results, with those items being sold for over 100 million yuan and 13 items for more than 10 million yuan, as well as a record for Pan Tianshou's works with 287.5 million yuan. What is even more gratifying is that we have noticed that the midrange price items, whose trade has been weakening in recent years, recovered this season. In the classic and modern sectors, deals of artists’ works with good quality and typical features were excellent, which also shows the quiet change of some structural demand in the market. The most admirable thing is that collecting institutions, corporate art galleries and private collectors active in Greater China are still confident, actively bidding top artworks in their collection system, and realizing the integration and replacement of old and new collectors. These combined forces have enabled the state of the art market to gradually exert its unusual influence in a relatively cool economic context. At the same time, it also proves that China Guardian has successfully won the trust of collectors, and has accumulated stronger confidence to face a positive and beautiful future.

Excellent results for China Guardian 2018 Autumn Auctions

Dai Wei, General Manager of Modern & Contemporary Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy Department

From spring to autumn this year, the overall atmosphere of the market is delicate. For the past six months, it has been like sailing in the dark. Fortunately, we are looking forward to the bright moon. Finally, we can see the sunrise in the morning mist.

The three-day Modern Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy sell during the autumn auctions achieved more than 1 billion transactions, which is exciting. There were many highlights in the sector Grand View, such as Pan Tianshou’s View From the Peek Peak and Fu Baoshi’s Inspired by Mao Tse-tung's Lyrics, which each sold for over 100 million yuan. The two sessions Beneath the Sunshine: Paintings Collection from He Rong Couple and Sweetness for People: Art works by Gu Yuan achieved a 100 percent turnover rate. There are abundant sources of permanent special sessions, fierce bidding for old collectors and strong price breakthroughs in the market. Contemporary Chinese Paintings are flourishing. Many artists' personal auction records were broken this season.

Our auction is more and more like a grand party. Old and new friends come from all over the world to gather at China Guardian, where they exchange views on art and share their understanding of the market. We have noticed that the market structure is undergoing profound changes. Old buyers are waiting for the opportunity, and new buyers are investigating intensively and growing at an amazing rate. The market is always evolving in the process of readjustment. More hands produce a stronger flame. Everything is ready for development.

Luan Jingli, General Manager of Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy Department

In the three-day preview, an endless stream of people came to the exhibition area of Grand View: Chinese Paintings Highlight · Classical. Two pieces of calligraphy for the Song Dynasty, three pieces of Shih-ch'u Pao-chi, Xu Wei’s Ink Peony Bamboo and Rocks, and Zhu Da’s Ink Duck were of special interest to visitors. We were moved and inspired by their enthusiasm and seriousness. Qian Weicheng’s Autumn Landscape led the sector Grand View: Chinese Paintings Highlight · Classical with a turnover of 67.85 million yuan. Deng Shiru’s Calligraphy in Seal Script sold for 10 times higher than expected. Zhu Da’s Ink Duck and Xu Wei’s Ink Peony Bamboo and Rocks both sold for ideal prices. Deal rates for the Grand View Chinese Paintings Highlight · Classical were slightly higher than in the spring auctions, which shows stability in the market confidence. Although three important items failed to trade in the final, leaving some regrets, every one of us in this short and busy auction season concentrated on collecting and screening the auction items, and carefully combing and compiling the catalogue, ultimately feeling accomplished. In this year of growth, we will make greater efforts to improve; work with  enthusiasm, sincerity and a down-to-earth attitude; strengthen ourselves; and grow with the company.

At this season's auctions, the turnover rate of the Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy day sector was similar to our estimate. Over the past few years, it has been more than 60 percent every year, but this time it was 76 percent, 13 points higher than in the spring auctions. The overall turnover rate for calligraphy was higher at 80 percent, with 84 percent for works from the Qing Dynasty. Calligraphy has been a hot spot in recent years, especially this year. Calligraphy is the easiest form of art to participate in. More and more people express their emotions and cultivate themselves through writing, which may be an important factor in the active market. With the expression and dissemination of calligraphy, the unique charm and function of Chinese calligraphy lies in the beautiful couplets, plaques and popular classical poems and articles. At today's auction, many works of calligraphy saw intense bidding and some sold at a price of over 10 times the estimate, showing a high degree of interest, which generated an atmosphere of excitement.

The increase in new buyers and diversified works is conducive to the steady development of the market. It is a new force and also our biggest harvest this season. Through extensive consignment at home and abroad, we have provided the vast number of collectors with extremely rich and attractive value items, and received a positive response. Several works by female painters and the little known works from the Jiaqing and Daoguang period of Qing Dynasty traded at a high prices, showing that we need high-quality spectacular evening sales, as well as day sales, which are more approachable and beneficial for interacting with new and old customers, activating the market, cultivating new collecting groups, prospering, and developing the art market.

Li Yanfeng, General Manager of 20th Century & Contemporary Art Department

The results for the 20th Century & Contemporary Art Department at the 2018 Autumn Auctions were satisfactory overall. The total turnover was nearly 400 million yuan. Important works were successfully traded and some sparked fierce bidding. What needs to be improved is fixed price artwork by consignment, which is not so suitable for the market. Now both the market and the collectors are maturing, and auctions must develop with them. In future consignment, pricing will be closer to the market, and works may need to be streamlined.

The turnover of several sessions in the 20th Century & Contemporary Art Department was balanced. In the Selected Masterpieces from a Private Asian Collection, works of Zao Wou-Ki, Wu Guanzhong and Sanyu sold at ideal prices. The turnover of Wu Dayu’s Yellow Rhythm broke the record for works of the same size. There were some highlights in the Contemporary Art Evening Sale, such as works of Zhou Chunya, Zeng Fanzhi and Zhang Xiaogang. The price of some mid-priced works, such as those by Zhao Bandi, Wang Huaiqing and Liu Ye, were also very stable. In future auctions, we should continue to move forward and make further progress.

This time, 13 items each sold for more than 10 million yuan, similar to the spring auctions. The total turnover stabilized to 4 billion yuan for three consecutive years, which is a satisfactory trend.

David Yu, General Manager of Ceramics and Works of Art Department

A total of 221 million yuan in transactions were made in the Ceramics and Works of Art sector in the 2018 Autumn Auctions, which met our expectations. It is not easy to achieve such a result in the current market environment. Among them, the Number Six (grinded off) Jianfugong Ninghuitang Yong, an extremely rare and important sky blue junyao flowerpot, lived up to people's expectations. After fierce competition, it sold at a high price of 48.875 million yuan and set a new world record in junyao transaction prices. There were many highlights in the Night Sale of Ceramics and Works of Art, as many porcelain items sold at a price higher than estimated and many deals were made. Lacquerware and jade ware also made gratifying achievements. In addition, the items on the covers of catalog of Buddha statues, zisha pottery and contemporary ceramics were all traded. The Collection of Yingxing Zisha Pottery by Song Taoyuan reached a 100 percent turnover rate. It is gratifying to note that the day and night sales for porcelain and works of arts were very popular, attracting a full house. Fine and Rare Kweichou Mou-tai Chiew achieved a 100 percent turnover rate for the fifth time, with trading volume reaching a new high. Among them, Maotai in the 1960s traded at a high price of 4.95 million yuan.

Qiao Hao, General Manager of Classical Furniture and Works of Art Department

The total turnover for the Classical Furniture and Works of Art sector in 2018 Autumn Auctions was 219 million yuan, which met our expectations. All key items traded for good prices. In the current market environment, we are very gratified by this achievement. This year is the 25th anniversary of the founding of China Guardian. The autumn auctions were very noticeable. Taking the classical furniture as an example, we tried to recreate the living environment of the ancients as much as possible in the consignment, such as the study and living room, and we included key items in each session and, more importantly, highlighted their academic nature. This was my ideal for auctions, and now we accomplished it. In the layout of the preview of the autumn auctions, we also broke from our previous pattern and made the exhibitions more lifelike, so people could experience the delicacy of life. This autumn, in addition to classical furniture, stones, guqin, studies and other traditional projects, we introduced furniture made by Mr. Wu Bingliang and furniture made by the Luzuo Cultural Museum, which represented the inheritance and development of classical art and served as a potential market. In the future, we will pay more attention to excavating the works of modern and contemporary artists.

Song Hao, General Manager of Rare Books, Rubbing & Manuscripts Department

When I took over the business of the Rare Books, Rubbing & Manuscripts Department in 2017, I had a small dream: When can the hummer price of items in Ancient Books exceed 100 million? Unexpectedly, this year coincided with the 25th anniversary of China Guardian, and my dream came true so quickly. Moreover, to borrow the words of my boss, the reality was even better than our dreams. The Spring Auctions saw an item being sold for over 100 million, but the Autumn Auctions made it 192.6 million yuan, which created a record for the highest price among rubbings. And the tatal turnover of the rare books, rubbing & manuscripts reached over 300 million yuan. This season, people gathered together because of fate. Many legendary magic items that have not been seen by our predecessors have been exposed to the public through our hands. This kind of luck is too rare. In addition to being surprised, we should be conscientious and responsible for the social responsibility of cultural heritage, and put trust in our guests.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of China Guardian, the Stamps, Coins, Silver Sycees, Banknotes Department launched six special sessions, which were not only popular in the market, but also highly academic and rich in content. In the section for postage items, the Victory of Cultural Revolution unissued stamp traded for 13.8 million yuan, breaking the world transaction record for Chinese stamps, ranking among the most precious postage products in the world, and leading Chinese postage products into the era of tens of millions of yuan. In the coin section, the Shuiguitang's Ancient Coin Collection reached a 100 percent turnover rate with all 475 items traded. Among them, a trial coin of Songkangyuanbao in the North Song Dynasty was sold at a price of 1.541 million yuan. The hammer dropped at a price of nearly 1 million yuan for a set of coins of Wang Mang Liuquanshibu. These three items were auctioned by China Guardian in 2004 and returned here on the 25th anniversary after 14 years. Rare collections with rich historical connotations and cultural backgrounds are the direction to guide the future collection market. We are grateful for the achievements of this autumn, and we are grateful for the trust and support of all collectors.
