To celebrate the 5th anniversary of China Guardian (HK), we at the Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Department proudly present seven sales this autumn, totalling over 600 lots spanning a variety of collecting categories.

 

“The Lana Cheung and Jim Kinoshita Collection of Chinese Art” consists of a superb array of Classical Chinese furniture, ceramics and Chinese paintings. Both hailing from creative backgrounds, the Kinoshitas began their collecting journey in the 1960s. Mr. Kinoshita, an influential Hong Kong-based architect, designed many landmarks in the city, such as Jardine House, The Landmark, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus, as well as Jinling Hotel in Nanjing. Mrs. Lana Cheung was a creative force behind the design of many hotels and airline properties in the 1960s and was widely acclaimed for her work. Together they became acquainted and built life-long friendships with some of the most influential scholars, artists and collectors of Chinese art in the 20th century. In 1987 they befriended the revered Chinese antique expert Wang Shixiang, who eventually inspired them to build their Classical furniture collection that were to include such gems as a huanghuali table with recessed waist and cabriole legs. The Kinoshitas were also introduced by Wang to renowned scholar Qigong, who penned the name “yixiao caotang” for the couple’s residence in Sai Kung. 

 

“Chinese Bronzes in the Collection of Zhu’s Jiu Ru Yuan” includes fine examples of ancient Chinese bronzes assembled by an important Hong Kong collector Zhu Changyan, led by a rare bronze ritual wine vessel from the Warring States period. An ardent lover of bronzes, Zhu enjoyed frequent scholarly exchange with Shanghai Museum curators Ma Chengyuan and Chen Peifen, both close friends of the late collector.

 

“Fine Chinese Works of Art from the Moore Collection” comprises more than 50 lots of early Chinese art including bronzes and stone sculpture, all acquired by a prominent collector and long-standing member of the Oriental Ceramics Society in Hong Kong. Highlights include an elaborately decorated bronze ritual food vessel from the Western Zhou period. Offered without reserve, the Collection promises to generate great excitement.

 

“Important Jades from an American Private Collection” consists of a carefully curated group of rare Han Dynasty jades of excellent quality, led by carvings of a dove and a ram. Most of these pieces were acquired by the present owner back in the 1990s. They are entirely fresh to the market and present a wonderful opportunity to acquire rare examples from this period.

 

“Ancient Chinese Ceramics from the Tang to the Song dynasty” features 30 superb examples of early wares from this high period of ceramic production, most of which acquired by private collectors in the 1990s. The selection highlights black glazed ceramics and tea ware, led by a Jian ware black glazed ‘hare’s fur’ tea bowl from the Southern Song dynasty, an exemplary piece from the former collection of a prominent Japanese family.

 

“Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art” will include a carefully selected group of nearly 300 lots of ceramics, jades, Buddhist art and scholar’s objects. Of particular interest are a fine Ge-type glazed vase from the Qianlong Period and an exceptional imperial hexagonal blue and white ‘dragon’ vase dating to the Jiajing reign and a celadon-glazed peony brushwasher from the Yongzheng Period that was from the family collection of Sir Chentung Liang Cheng, a prominent Chinese diplomat of the late Qing dynasty..

 

Last but not least, “Virtue & Purity - A Selection of Fine Chinese Jade Carvings” will contain around 200 pieces of exceptionally quality of ancient jade carvings. Some of the highlights include a finely carved large green jade buffalo, 17th century; a white jade Mughal-style chrysanthemum bowl, a very rare imperial inscribed white jade ‘luohan’ grotto, and a white and russet jade brushwasher all dated to the Qianlong Emperor’s reign.
